In the world of Fredrick the Great: Berlin and Dresden
September 15-24, 2012
Celebrate the tercentenary of the birth of Frederick the Great. In Dresden, visit the spectacular Green Vault and the porcelain and art museums, enjoy a cruise to Pillnitz and tour the Bauhaus Museum in Dessau. In Potsdam, see areas of the Neues Palais never before open to
the public and view Berlin’s splendid collections.
When, for forty six years, Frederick II ruled over the Kingdom of Prussia, he astonished Europe, not just by his dramatic successes, but also by the paradoxes of his life. An intellectual and passionate collector whose first language was French, he was also a predatory conqueror and a dictatorial ruler.
As his tercentenary is celebrated, a major exhibition will occupy hitherto unseen rooms in the Neues Palais in Potsdam. We will also visit Sans Souci, his favorite residence, and the dazzling museums of Berlin. Dresden, too, was conquered by Frederick, and we will begin our trip with visits to its superbly restored museums. In both cities, we will enjoy the best of the eighteenth century in Central Europe.

Libya, 2013
Libya is a crossroads of history, continents and ancient empires. Home to the Mediterranean’s richest store of Roman and Greek cities – Sabratha, Cyrene and, above all, Leptis Magna – each of which is overlaid by remnants of Byzantine splendour, it’s a place where history comes alive through the extraordinary monuments on its shores. Every corner of cosmopolitan Tripoli resonates with a different period of history. It’s where the Sahara meets the Mediterranean.
Despite recent turmoil, Libya is set to revive its tourism industry in a big way. Be one of the first to experience the sense of history and civilisation this country has to offer after the overthrow of the military regime. CKS looks forward to welcoming you all on what will be an inspiring trip in 2013.
Angkor-Borobudur, 2014
Like Angkor Wat in Cambodia and Bagan in Myanmar, Java’s Borobudur makes the rest of Southeast Asia’s spectacular sites seem almost incidental. Looming out of a patchwork of bottle-green paddies and swaying palm tops, this colossal Buddhist relic is one of Southeast Asia’s marvels, surviving Gunung Merapi’s ash flows, terrorist bombs, and the wear and tear of a million pairs of tourist flip-flops (thongs) to remain as enigmatic and beautiful as it must have been 1200 years ago.
The temples of Angkor, capital of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer empire, are a perfect fusion of creative ambition and spiritual devotion. The Cambodian god-kings of old each strove to top their ancestors in size, scale and symmetry, culminating in the world’s largest religious building, Angkor Wat, and one of its weirdest, the Bayon.
Take a trip of a lifetime with CKS to these tresures of the ancient world in 2014.
