Supported by the
Rockefeller Foundation,
CKS seeks a Visiting Scholar in the Modern History of Mainland Southeast Asia for September 2008
JFT, the Center for Khmer Studies’ third program funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, targets selected junior faculty members committed to teaching and graduate students wishing to pursue advanced training in preparation for university careers, and seeks to enhance their knowledge base and academic and research skills. Following the model of the previous Rockefeller Foundation program, Building Capacity in Cambodian Higher Education begun in 2004, JFT is composed of four sessions over the course of two years and covers a series of topical issues in the humanities and social sciences as determined by Cambodian partner institutions of higher education, including Archaeology, Modern History, Economic Development and Political Science. Each six month session includes three components: training seminars on selected topics; workshops on research methodology; and individual and collective supervised field-research projects. Yearly conferences are held on related topics allowing participants to present their research findings and promote their exposure to overseas universities. JFT emphasizes interdisciplinary, comparative, cross-cultural and regional approaches, guided by esteemed scholars in the field. Participants are encouraged to work collegially and collaboratively, irrespective of their institution of affiliation. English and Khmer are the main working languages. Over the long term, CKS hopes that JFT will enhance faculty and curricular offerings at Cambodian universities. At the same time, it strengthens the skills necessary for original research by faculty and advanced students, benefiting individual participants, and by extension, their students and institutions. JFT is guided by an Advisory Council involving local partner institutions. An Academic Committee oversees each session, which is led by a Visiting Scholar. The Program Director leads the program as a whole. Detailed information about the project
