From its inception, CKS has sought to provide fellowships for students and scholars as a way to promote research and international scholarly exchange on Cambodia and the Mekong region, among the international community of scholars and their Cambodian colleagues.  A three-year grant from the Henry Luce Foundation in 2000 allowed CKS to develop its first fellowship program for U.S. doctoral students conducting field research in Cambodia, and since then, the CKS Fellowship Programs have continued to expand.

CKS Fellows are given direct funding for their research or education, access to CKS resources and contacts and provided with logistical support while in country.  CKS can also serve as a host institution for scholars from any country conducting research on Cambodia when they become affiliated scholars.

Currently, CKS fellowship programs fall into the following categories:

Senior Fellowship Program for those conducting pre-doctoral and post-doctoral research, supported by the U.S. Dept. of State/ECA program through CAORC for American scholars and the Florence Gould Foundation in collaboration with Paris-based Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO)  for French scholars.

A Junior Fellowship Program  for American, French and Cambodian undergraduates and recent graduates, supported by the Henry Luce Foundation, the Florence Gould Foundation and the Cogut Family Foundation.  The purpose of this two-month residential program based in Siem Reap is to encourage interest in Southeast Asian studies among the next generation of scholars and draw new people to the field.

CKS also facilitates Graduate Fellowships for promising Cambodian students to pursue their Master’s or PhDs at overseas universites, with funding provided by the Asian Cultural Council and the Rockefeller Foundation.  CKS also assists the Harvard-Yenching Institute in providing one three-year funded doctoral fellowship in the Humanities and the Social Sciences every year.
